Retinol. Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative, long hailed as the go to treatment for aging skin. Retinols offer many benefits for the skin, including-collagen production, smoothing an uneven skin tone and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. While all of this is true, did you know that retinol was first indicated to treat acne?

Acne affects some 50 million Americans annually, 54% of them being women and 40% of them being men over the age of 25. There are multiple causes of adult acne, including stress and hormonal imbalances, but a key factor to consider is lack of exfoliation. As we age, our natural skin cycle slows down and our dead skin cells are slower to turn over. As a result, pores become blocked, which can lead to acne. Unlike salicylic acid which removes congestion in the pores or benzoyl peroxide which kills the acne bacteria on the surface of the skin, Retinol works from the inside out. When applied topically, retinol turns into retinoic acid inside our skin, enhancing and accelerating our cellular turnover. This intense level of exfoliation dissolves away dead skin layers and clears pore blockages leaving you with a more even, clear and radiant complexion over time.

New to retinols? It is best to start out with a with a lower dose or more gentle formulation. Over the counter formulations generally offer percentages of retinol products, such as .25%, .5% or 1.0%. Or, some companies offer a blend of alpha and beta hydroxy acids in combination with retinols to give you your best refined skin. AlphaRet Overnight Cream by SkinBe++er Science is an award-winning Allure Best Buy that contains a powerful blend of lactic, glycolic acid and a new patented Retinoid technology. Unlike traditional retinol products, AlphaRet is very tolerable, even for the most sensitive of skins. It provides moisture to the skin along with significant exfoliation while creating little-to-no irritation. (We consider this a miracle worker!) This product is designed to use as part of your nighttime regimen; a pea-sized amount will cover your entire face. Retinols and alpha/beta hydroxy acids do increase your sun sensitivity – so daily use of an SPF of 30+ is a must. If you are new to retinols, it is best to begin slowly – start every other evening or every third evening for the first week or two and increase the frequency as tolerated. Lastly, moisturize! Your skin will thank you. A light weight noncomedogenic moisturizer will help balance your own natural sebum (oil) production and help to combat any dryness caused by the retinol.
