We’ve all heard of Botox- but with Dysport shining its light in the marketplace, SKN BAR Rx helps you understand the difference to help guide your journey to ageless beauty! SKN BAR RX IS HERE TO SERVE THE GREATER MILWAUKEE AREA AND GUIDE YOU THROUGH INJECTABLES, HOW THEY WORK AND HOW OUR TEAM OF MEDICAL AESTHETICIANS CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR SKINCARE GOALS WITH A TREATMENT PLAN.
Wrinkles are a natural sign of aging. As we get older, our skin loses elastin due to decreased collagen production. Things like sun damage, stress, smoking, and overuse of facial muscles and expressions can speed up the aging process. Luckily, with the help of injectables like Botox and Dysport, our certified nurse injectors can help temporarily relax the muscles in the face, ultimately smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is a brand name of the protein botulinum toxin owned by Allergan, and works to temporarily weaken and relax the specific muscle it is being injected in. Introduced in 1989, and approved for cosmetic use in 2002, Botox was the first FDA-approved Botulinum Type A neuromodulator. Botox not only helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles, but can also be used to relax muscles that cause migraines, TMJ and excessive sweating.

WHAT IS DYSPORT?

Similar to Botox, the active ingredient in Dysport is also a Botulinum Type A. After Botox’s introduction to the marketplace, many other companies strived to bring their brand of this effective neurotoxin to be used cosmetically to help with wrinkles. Dysport, owned by Galderma, was commonly known as Botox’s European counterpart before being approved in the US in 2009.

THE DIFFERENCE EXPLAINED
Despite its similarities in ingredients and effectiveness, the main differential factor between the two come down to concentration. Botox is more heavily concentrated with the neurotoxin at an almost 3:1 ratio. But because Dysport is more diluted, it tends to spread faster than Botox, making it the perfect option for treating larger surface areas including the forehead and 11 lines. Due to the heavier concentrate of Botox, it moves a little slower- perfect for treating smaller areas such as crows feet and lip lines.
Both Botox and Dysport are very effective for treating fine lines and wrinkles and they both last generally around 3-4 months. Over time, the neuromodular breaks down into simple proteins that your body absorbs, and movement in the muscle returns, although with less wrinkles than before. This is a great time to reserve your next appointment!
The process for Botx and Dysport are generally the same. Your initial consultation with your nurse injector will cover aesthetic goals, medical history and a customized treatment plan. These injections are non-invasive procedures that take less than 30 minutes. A treatment plan can include the injection of both neurotoxins, and they are safe to inject during the same treatment. They are also safe to be paired with dermal fillers (lip, cheek and/or jaw filler) to help restore a youthful look by smoothing wrinkles and adding volume.
SMOOTH INJECTION POST-CARE
It is important to follow up your injectable treatment with the proper care to ensure safety and effectiveness. Prior to your Botox or Dysport Injections, follow these rules:
- Avoid strenuous exercise or activity for 4 hours post-treatment
- Avoid laying down for 4 hours
- Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours
- Avoid massaging areas of the injection site to ensure the neurotoxin does not spread to other areas
- Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 24 hours
- Avoid facial treatments (facials, peels, lasers) for at least 2 weeks

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR SMOOTH INJECTIONS LAST LONGER
- Invest in a high quality skincare routine including a cleanser, exfoliant, retinol, vitamin C and moisturizer. Products containing hyaluronic acid and collagen can help keep your skin more smooth and hydrated.
- Become an avid SPF user! This helps to avoid sun damage where 90% of aging comes from in the first place.
- Stress can cause us to inadvertently frown and scowl, which is why it is important to keep stress levels down. Not only for your injections to last longer, but for your overall mental health and wellbeing!
- According to this dermatology study, over 90% of patients noticed zinc supplements helped their smooth injections last longer.
At SKN BAR Rx we are passionate about providing an educated and informed approach to injectables.
