What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is the first and original FDA-approved injectable collagen stimulator designed to restore skin structure and volume in the common areas that start to show signs of aging like the temples, cheeks, and jawline.

If you are someone concerned with signs of aging or loss of collagen, we have a new injectable for you! Introducing Sculptra– an injectable biostimulator designed to help boost your body’s natural collagen productions to improve skin elasticity, volume, and help you glow from within.

Let's Talk Collagen

Collagen is a protein that provides structural support and elasticity to various tissues within the body like our skin, bones, tendons and ligaments and also plays an important role in maintaining the vitality and elasticity of our skin. Did you know that after about age 25, you start to lose about 1% of collagen per year? The depletion of this vital protein is responsible for signs of aging including fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. But why is this protein so important for maintaining a youthful appearance?  Collagen helps support our skin providing it with firmness, plumpness and resilience.

Collagen loss naturally accompanies the aging process, yet factors such as sun exposure, smoking, excessive sugar consumption, stress, and inadequate sleep can exacerbate both aging and collagen depletion. However, there’s hope: by adopting healthier lifestyle habits and incorporating skincare products enriched with retinol, vitamin C, and peptides, you can bolster your collagen production. For those seeking a more immediate solution to address signs of aging and volume loss, Sculptra emerges as a reliable ally.

THE BENEFITS OF SCULPTRA

The Difference Between a Sculptra and Dermal Fillers

Both dermal fillers and Sculptra help address facial volume loss and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; however, the way these two products work to achieve this is quite different. Most dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally occurring substance found in the skin that helps maintain hydration and volume. Dermal fillers can be injected to different areas of the face like the lips, cheeks, under eyes, chin, and jawline to help restore volume loss, correct fine lines/wrinkles and folds. Treatment with dermal fillers allows for the results to be seen instantly after injections and can last anywhere from 6 months to two years depending on the product used, amount, and individual metabolism. Depending on the area being treated and desired results, one to several syringes can be used.

Sculptra on the other hand is composed of microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that over time helps stimulate your own body’s fibroblasts to produce type 1 collagen to help improve skin elasticity and volume restoration. This process of collagen synthesis starts the day the product is injected, and noticeable results are typically noted around the 3-6 months mark. The product should last around 1-2 years, but the new collagen your skin will produce can last for years down the road. With Sculptra, individuals can expect to initally require about 2-3 treatment sessions spaced 8 weeks apart. Areas commonly treated are the temples, cheeks, chin, and jawline. Once the desired results are achieved, one yearly maintenance treatment session is recommended.

Who is a good candidate for Sculptra?

Sculptra is an incredible injectable for those seeking to address volume loss and correct shallow-to deep wrinkles and folds on the face. Candidates should be in overall good health with no history of keloid scarring. Sculptra works to gradually stimulate collagen production, thus, candidates should be aware that results will not be instantaneous when setting expectations and planning treatments.

A good rule of thumb for Sculptra results and treatment plan is a “vile for every decade of life”. A single treatment can consist of one or two vials of sculptra. So, depending on your age and skin concerns, you may need multiple treatment to achieve desired results. On average, clients may need 3-4 sessions (treatment sessions vary by patient).

What to expect during your sculptra appointment

When you arrive at your Sculptra appointment you can expect to receive a gentle cleanse of the face followed by skin prep involving disinfectant solutions. Topical numbing can be applied to injectable areas to further help with discomfort, however, the Sculptra mixture does contain lidocaine, as well. Sculptra can be injected with needles, cannula, or a combination of both. Typically, the procedure is well tolerated and takes about an hour to complete.

Expected side effects include some bruising and swelling, with the swelling typically subsiding by the second day. To minimize the risk of bruising, clients can prepare beforehand by taking over-the-counter arnica supplements starting at least three days prior to the procedure, avoiding alcohol and NSAIDs (such as Aleve, aspirin, and Advil) for 48 hours beforehand. Bromelain and pineapple intake are also helpful in reducing the risk of bruising and overall recovery. Post-care instructions include adhering to the 5-5-5 rule: massage the injected area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days. Remember to plan to return in about 8 weeks for your next treatment.
