Botox is one of the most widely performed cosmetic treatments, not just at SKN BAR RX, but worldwide. It has been around for about two decades, yet there are still many misconceptions surrounding what Botox really is. Let’s debunk some of the most common myths surround this widely known cosmetic treatment.
1. “BOTOX IS PERMANENT”
Even though some may wish, Botox is not permanent! Botox is a temporary solution to reduce and soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. After injection, Botox lasts approximately 90-days, or 3 months. This duration of Botox is very dependent on many lifestyle factors such as exercise frequency, metabolism rate, intake of certain dietary items or medications, and more. So, although Botox is indicated to last around 90-days, it may last longer or even shorter depending on those possible factors listed above. After the Botox has worn off, your muscle movement will begin to return, therefore allowing the wrinkles to gradually reappear as well.
2. “YOU WILL LOOK FROZEN AFTER GETTING BOTOX”
This is one of the largest misconceptions I hear as an Aesthetic Nurse Injector. This has unfortunately become a major fear in those who have not yet had Botox and can often stray people away from getting treated with Botox altogether. The idea Botox will make you look frozen or emotionless is only true when you are injected by an injector who does not use proper techniques. My catchphrase for my injecting approach is, “the best aesthetic treatment is one where you cannot tell you’ve had anything done.” Now of course I want there to be a difference from your baseline compared to your final results, however you should still look natural. My goal is to never have any of my patients look robotic or frozen. My goal is to give you a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
3. “BOTOX CAN ONLY BE USED WHEN LINES BEGIN TO APPEAR”
NO! Botox can absolutely be used before lines begin to appear! Botox = prevention. Why? When we make facial expressions and move our face, our skin creates lines. However, when our face is resting and we are not making expressions, those line disappear, right? The issue arises when those etched lines eventually stay put when we are not making expressions. Those lines at rest are referred to as static lines. The more deeply set a static line is, the more difficult it is to completely reverse. Using Botox at that point will soften those static lines, but that’s all they may end up doing; only softening and never diminishing. This is why getting Botox before those static lines become too etched in our face is so vital because we can easily prevent rather than try to correct at a more difficult stage!
4. “BOTOX CAN ONLY BE USED TO TREAT WRINKLES”
Botox use has changed dramatically since it was first introduced! Botox can now be used for much, much more than just wrinkles. There has been a major expansion in areas in which Botox is commonly injected. Just some of the cosmetic uses for Botox include, lifting the eyebrows, softening the “bunny lines” on the nose, slimming the lower portion of the face, adding the illusion of fullness to the upper lip, and raising the corners of the mouth than can downturn over time. In addition, therapeutic use of Botox is also widely used. Botox can treat migraines, axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating), jaw pain or discomfort and more!
5. “BOTOX RESULTS WILL BE IMMEDIATE”
Unfortunately, Botox does not provide immediate results. The results usually will become apparent within the first 3-5 days, but the overall results can take up to 14 days to appear. This is because Botox works by temporarily disabling communication between nerves and muscles. It takes time to inhibit the movement of the muscles, which is why results aren’t immediate. It is always recommended to plan your Botox appointment 2 weeks before any event to ensure you have maximal effect beforehand.
6. “BOTOX IS A TOXIN SO IT CAN’T BE SAFE“
Botox has been used for about two decades and is a completely safe treatment. The idea that Botox is unsafe stems from its origin, and some believe that as Botox is a derivative from botulinum toxin, which is typically connected to food poisoning, that it is not safe. Although Botox is derived from a protein found in botulinum toxin, the levels that are injected into the body are not high enough to be considered toxic. Botox has received approval from the FDA and is used regularly for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes. Botox is very safe when injected in a regulated amount. It is important that you select only well-qualified, licensed aesthetic nurse injectors to administer Botox. Equally important is to ensure the qualifications of your nurse injector before seeking treatment, so that you will have safe and dependable results.
7. “ANYONE CAN INJECT BOTOX”
No, not just anyone can inject Botox. Although the administration of Botox is non-invasive and performed every day, it is still considered a medical treatment. Therefore, Botox should only ever be injected by a well-qualified, experienced, licensed, and certified healthcare professional. Getting treated by an aesthetic nurse injector ensures that your treatment is done correctly and safely. Having a non-professional administrate your Botox treatment can lead to an array of adverse events. This is why it is imperative to do your homework and review the qualifications of your provider before seeking treatment.
It is easy to fall for the mentioned misconceptions. However, Botox treatments have so many advantages! If you wish for a youthful, rejuvenated appearance, Botox treatments may be right for you.
