The lip flip is a trending treatment that involves a small amount of Botox that is precisely placed along the upper lip muscle.
Relaxing this area of the muscle allows the lip to curl outward giving the appearance of more full upper lip. This is a perfect treatment for patients that are looking for a fuller, upper lip, and for patients that feel as though their upper lip is thinning or “disappearing” or want their smile to appear less gummy.
What is the Difference Between a Lip Flip and Lip Filler?
Lip flips can also be used along with a small amount of filler to add additional volume to the shape of the lips and to the bottom lip. A lip flip and lip fillers both result in fuller-looking lips, but the procedures are different. While lip flips will make your lips appear plumper, filler do truly add volume to the lip. Filler and Botox can safely be used together for this treatment, and you should consider using filler if you are looking to add definition to the outlines of your lips or to add volume and symmetry to the lower lip.
A lip flip usually only takes about 10-15 minutes and has little downtime. A perfect aesthetic treatment to receive on–the-go, or even on your lunch break. The neurotoxin in this area typically lasts 6-8 weeks, so you should note that treatments will need to be repeated about every two months to maintain your results. Normally, Botox in other areas of the face will last around three months. But because the muscle being injected (the orbicularis oris) is a muscle that we use more frequently than other muscles in our face, and the lower dose of units used in that area, the neurotoxin wears off quicker than other muscles.
Side effects of a lip flip can include minor bruising or swelling can occur at the injection site, which should reside after 24-48 hours (about 2 days). If too much Botox is injected in this area, it can affect the functionality of the upper lip muscle, which is why it is important to use around 4-6 units of Botox in this region of the face. Another consideration of the lip flip is that due to the upper lip muscle being relaxed, it could potentially make it more difficult to drink through a straw, whistle, spit (for example when brushing your teeth) and to rub your lips together when applying lip balm.
Lip Flip After Care
If you experience bruising and/or swelling, apply ice with a thin cloth to the affected area. Aloe Vera, Arnica and Vitamin K may help to reduce bruising. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours after injections, as elevated blood pressure can make bruising worse. Stay hydrated, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and avoid sodium, which can contribute to swelling.
