“Skinimalism”
It has been popularized on social media to showcase excessive skincare routines that include bottle after bottle of skincare morning and night. We’re here to share with you a new trend that combats this – skinimalism. As described earlier, it’s the dose of minimalism you and your skincare routine may need. Of course though, if skin care is how you relax, then go ahead and enjoy the 12-step routine. What we are here to share is that these excessive regimens should not be normalized by any means and people shouldn’t feel stressed out by their skincare routine. If simple is what you need in a skincare routine it can most definitely be achieved and produce incredible results.
The Problem with Excessive Skin-Care Routines
While taking care of your skin is certainly a positive, all this skin-care frenzy is not without its downsides. Dermatologists, aestheticians, and nurses report seeing more patients who are doing the most with their skin-care regimens yet are experiencing new problems such as acne and irritation. At SKN BAR Rx, we have had clients come in with red, peeling, flaking skin, and they don’t know why. The cause can sometimes be an overloaded skincare routine. Instead of the skincare helping troubled skin become healthier, the product overload is instead introducing new issues by using three or four products that do the same thing, or mixing products that shouldn’t be used together. So, if you’re breaking out or getting a rash, we must cut products out to restore the skin barrier. Taking a skinimalist approach doesn’t mean giving up the products you love for good; it can mean stepping back for a period of time and allowing your skin the chance to repair itself. That involves going back to the basics — a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
Step 1: The Baseline
Truth be told, less is more when it comes to professional skincare products and treatments. SkinBetter Science takes up the least amount of space on our shelves in the retail store and on your bathroom counter. Why do you think that is? Each product packs a punch towards results. Let’s start with our baseline products—cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. As a licensed esthetician we should always opt for two from each of these categories for our patients.
SkinBetter Science carries two cleansers:
- Cleansing Gel: This is great to pre-cleanse and remove makeup. A go-to for pre and/or post-procedure treatment cleansing. It is also the more gentle and hydrating option of the two.
- Oxygen Infusion Wash: Offers a bit more exfoliation and contains active ingredients.
SkinBetter Science carries two moisturizers:
- Hydration Boosting Cream: This moisturizer offers a lighter formulation out of the two.
- Trio: Heavy hydration without the weight. Brings balance back to dry, aged skin. What’s great is that both moisturizers can be used each day. Hydration Boosting cream is perfect for daytime wear and Trio can be used at night for heavier moisturization.
The brand also has a variety of sunscreens depending on if you prefer sheer protection or a tone-adapting skin tint. They not only have liquid formulas but also stick and compact versions as well.
Step 2: The Morning Brightening and Night-Time Rejuvenator
The next vital products that you will want to incorporate after you’re consistent with your baseline regimen is a Vitamin C and a Retinol (or Tretinoin). These 2 products are designed to not only prevent future signs of aging, but also lighten hyperpigmentation, boost elasticity, minimize fine lines, pore size, and texture. Vitamin C should be used primarily in the morning while Retinol (or Tretinoin) are for night-time use only.
The way we remember this is by saying:
Orange Juice (Vitamin C) in the morning
The SkinBetter Science product you are going to want to turn to for your morning dose of Viamin C is the Alto/Alto Advanced. This product helps improve the appearance of skin dullness, redness and overall tone and texture, for brighter, more radiant-looking skin.
Wine (Retinol/Tretinoin) at night
We love SkinBetter Sciences’ AlphaRet line which improves the appearance of lines, wrinkles, uneven tone, and texture.
Step 3: The Cherry On Top
Our next suggestion is narrowing down what other concerns you may have. Are you looking to minimize your pigmentation, target fine lines or possibly combat your acne? Here are some of our favorite additional products to add to your regimen based on your concerns.
We suggest incorporating one or all these morning AND night (after Vitamin C, but before AlphaRet) to further target one of your concerns.
Pigment: SkinBetter Science Even Tone Correcting Serum – Improves the appearance of brown patches, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and discoloration.
Lines: SkinBetter Science InterFuse Intensive Treatment Lines – A no-needle, hyaluronic acid solution that improves the appearance of deep expression lines and wrinkles.
Acne: SkinBetter Science AlphaRet Exfoliating Peel Pads – Made up of a combination of a retinoid and an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), along with a triple-acid blend of glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid.
Skinimalism is a trend we feel is here to stay! Having a skincare regimen that is stress free and less threatening is our goal as licensed estheticians. Start slow with your routine, take a step back and look at all your products. Are all of them serving you? Are each of them taking you a step closer to your skincare goals or really targeting your concerns? Are some of them contradicting each other? Take a look and spring clean your skincare products. Start fresh and enjoy a simplified, stress-free routine that delivers results!
