With swimsuit season in full swing, we understand how uncomfortable it can feel to have acne on your buttock. We’ve all been there so know you’re not alone! Here’s what you need to know to help keep your backside looking smooth and acne-free this summer.
WHAT IS BUTTOCKS ACNE?
Booty acne, also known as buttock acne or folliculitis, is a common condition characterized by small red bumps or pimples on the buttocks. Compared to acne on your face, folliculitis is different in that the red bumps that appear on your buttocks are typically a mild infection of the hair follicle, which leads to red bumps.
4 CAUSES OF BUTTOCKS ACNE
There are numerous causes of buttocks acne but luckily you can prevent a lot of them! Let’s review what the most common causes are:
1. SITTING TOO MUCH
Too much chair time can cause a large amount of pressure on your buttocks and lead to a breakout. For those of you who spend most of your day working at a desk, stand up every once and while! It will feel great to stretch your legs all while preventing any booty acne that might want to appear from sitting. If you work in the office or from home, we suggest investing in a stand-up desk or standing desk tabletop attachment to help you take breaks and get up off the chair throughout your workday.
2. NOT CHANGING YOUR UNDERWEAR DAILY
Dirt, sweat and oil all build up on your underwear throughout the day. These are all major causes of acne and with an increased amount of these on your underwear, you are raising your chances of getting buttocks acne. Changing your underwear is an easy thing to do and you’ll thank yourself later when you’re more comfortable putting your bathing suit on!
3. KEEPING YOUR SWEATY CLOTHES ON AFTER A WORKOUT
It is always a good idea to change out of your sweaty clothes when you are done working out, especially since sweat can dry up your pores. When your pores are dried up, dirt and dust become trapped, leaving room for red bumps to form.
4. WEARING TIGHT CLOTHING
Yep, those tight leggings and jeans that you love so much can unfortunately be a cause of buttocks acne. Tight clothes are another leading cause of trapped oil and sweat while having a lot of friction with your skin. Let your booty breathe every so often by opting for loose fitted pants or a dress!
BOOTY LOVING TREATMENTS & PRODUCTS
If you are doing everything to prevent the causes we talked about earlier but you’re not seeing improvement in your buttock’s acne, consider stopping into SKN BAR Rx for a treatment. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you are feeling confident for summer in no time.
HydraFacial
This rejuvenating treatment deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates the skin with nourishing ingredients. You will see major improvement in the complexion of your buttocks with a series of 4-6 treatments every 4 weeks.
There is also no downtime with a HydraFacial, so you’ll leave the spa feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the day. Keep in mind though that your skin is sensitive after the treatment, so it is best to not only limit sun exposure before your treatment, but also after your treatment.
SkinBetter Science AlphaRet Peel Pads
These SkinBetter Science AlphaRet Peel Pads are a blend of salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid and a whisper of retinol. They treat many common skin impurities such as acne, congestion, blackheads, oil, pigmentation, scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, dullness, and redness.
We advise you to use them 3x a week on your buttocks to see the most improvement. With these easy-to-use peel pads, all you must do is wipe them over the area you want treated and you’re done!
If you tend to use an exfoliating scrub in the shower prior to using these pads, don’t be alarmed if you start experiencing a slight burning sensation during the application, as this is a good sign and means the peel pads are working! The pre-exfoliation just makes it a bit more sensitive.

Topical Treatments
If you are experiencing a mild case of buttocks acne, it can be treated with topical treatments that include ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. If you are considering topical treatments, schedule a consultation with us so we can assess your skin and provide you with the best recommendation!
If by chance a topical treatment doesn’t improve the skin, we suggest consulting with a dermatologist for further evaluation and treatment options.
