Microneedling falls under many different names, some being; dermapen, skin needling, or collagen induction therapy. No matter what you call it they all produce the same incredible result — softer, smoother, younger looking skin. How, you may ask? In this blog we will cover what exactly microneedling is, what skin concerns can benefit from the treatment, and much more!
What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling uses an automated pen with disposable needle tips to make micro channels or controlled injuries into the outermost layer of the skin. These micro channels stimulate the body’s healing response which encourages the product of new, healthy, collagen-rich tissue. The natural inclination our bodies have to release new collagen will lift, tighten, and rejuvenate the skin which will reduce the appearance of large pores, fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring on all skin types.

Skin Concerns That Will Benefit From Microneedling:

      • Wrinkles and thin skin
      • Hyperpigmentation
      • Rough texture
      • Rosacea
      • Acne scarring
      • Lax skin
      • UV damage
      • Stretch marks (microneedling is not only for the face!)

Things to Avoid Before and After Treatment:

      • Prolonged sun exposure. Stay out of the sun or tanning beds for at least 24 hours before and after treatment.
      • Vitamin A (Retinol), Vitamin C, topical antibiotics/medications, any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acids, or anything considered as ‘active’ skincare should not be used for at least 24 hours before and after treatment.
      • Accutane should be avoided for at least 6 months prior to microneedling treatment.
      • No strenuous activity or exercise for 24 hours post-treatment.

How to Prepare for Microneedling:

      • Schedule a Consultation — This may be the service that is going to give you the skin you have always wanted, but there may also be another treatment that would be a better option for you and your skin. A consultation with one of our aesthetic professionals will allow them to assess your skin and provide you with options and information that may answer any questions you may have. Having a clear understanding of your skin’s current health will help you understand what treatments and products are best for you.
      • Hydration and Diet — Drinking lots of water and maintaining healthy eating habits is the best way to ensure your skin is healthy and prepared for this treatment. Fueling your body with nutrients such as vitamin c and antioxidants will help your body heal itself and do it in an efficient way so you get the supple appearance you desire,
      • Begin or maintain a good skincare routine — You will see optimum results if you skin is in a healthy state. Using products and providing your skin with nutrients it need will help strengthen and be more resilient against the micro injuries it will ensure. Quality products will also aid in the healing process after treatment. Your SKN BAR professional will recommend high-quality products and help you understand when and how they should be used.
      • Exfoliate — It is very important to not over exfoliate before receiving this treatment, but it is needed to see best results. We recommend receiving an exfoliating treatment from us such as dermaplaning before your microneedling service. Removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin will make it easier for the needles to penetrate into the upper layers of the skin and will allow for better product absorption.

Expectations:

      • Having more than one treatment is very common and recommended. Microneedling is not a quick fix. Your skin will begin to improve as the body repairs itself and grows new tissue — this takes time.
      • Even though microneedling is not designed to dramatically alter your skin right away, some patients are able to see results such as a reduction of UV damage and dark spots, as well as stretch marks becoming less noticeable after only one treatment.
      • Right after treatment you can expect your skin to feel tight, more sensitive, and will have some redness and inflammation. These symptoms should subside by the end of the day if not a few hours after treatment. This downtime after this treatment is very minimal, but also different for everyone.
      • The results of microneedling have excellent longevity because when the body produces new collagen, it stays in the skin for a few years.
