Looking for a natural way to support anti-aging benefits? Gua Sha routines have been trending recently for its ability to help promote a more lifted, glowing appearance. When paired with skincare products, Gua Sha can help massage them into the skin and support better product absorption. This is why, at SKN BAR Rx, we incorporate Gua Sha into our treatment routines. But how does Gua Sha work, and how can you use it at home?
What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha, originally rooted in traditional Chinese practices, is a non-invasive wellness technique that uses a smooth, flat stone to gently massage the skin. Using upward and outward motions, this tool helps release tension along the jawline, cheeks, forehead, neck, and under-eye area.
Gua Sha routines are often used to help relieve facial tension, support the appearance of reduced puffiness, encourage lymphatic flow, and create a more sculpted look. Many estheticians recommend Gua Sha as a complement to professional facials and skincare treatments such as those offered at SKN BAR Rx.
The History of Gua Sha
Gua Sha is one of the oldest forms of traditional Chinese medicine also known as TCM and was originally used for full body wellness, not just facial skincare. The term roughly translates to scraping sand, with sha referring to the temporary redness that can appear after treatment.
Traditionally, the tool often made from jade, bone, or smooth stone was used with more pressure across the body to help support circulation and release tension believed to be associated with stagnant energy or qi. In modern skincare, Gua Sha has evolved into a gentler facial technique focused on relaxation, massage, and visible skin benefits.
Benefits
A Gua Sha routine can help support mindfulness by encouraging a slower and more intentional skincare. It is widely appreciated for combining wellness and skincare benefits, which is why we love incorporating it into treatments at SKN BAR Rx.
Skin Appearance:
By encouraging circulation, Gua Sha can help improve the look of skin radiance and glow. It may also help reduce the appearance of puffiness especially in the morning and create a temporary lifted sculpted effect. With consistent use, many people notice a more refreshed and even looking complexion, particularly after periods of stress or lack of sleep.
Anti-Aging and Facial Contouring:
Gua Sha is often used to support anti aging skincare goals. At SKN BAR Rx, we educate clients that visible signs of aging are commonly associated with a natural decrease in collagen production over time. While skincare habits, treatments, and lifestyle choices can all support healthier looking skin, incorporating tools like Gua Sha may help support the appearance of firmness and elasticity when used consistently. When used correctly, Gua Sha stimulates the surface layers of the skin and supports microcirculation. This can help soften the appearance of tension lines, improve skin smoothness, and promote a more radiant looking complexion.
Circulation and Lymphatic:
A consistent Gua Sha routine can help the face appear more sculpted by encouraging the movement of fluid through gentle massage techniques. This supports the appearance of reduced puffiness and promotes a more refreshed look. By stimulating circulation, Gua Sha also helps support oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin, which contributes to a healthy-looking glow. Outward strokes can also help reduce the look of congestion, especially in areas like the jawline and under eye area.
Relaxation and Stressed Muscles:
The gentle movements used in a Gua Sha routine help relax facial muscles that commonly hold tension. This can soften the appearance of expression lines in areas such as the jaw, forehead, temples, and brows. Taking a few minutes in the morning or evening can also help create a calming self care ritual and leave the skin looking more refreshed. Gua Sha can also be used on the neck and shoulders where tension often builds and can contribute to facial tightness.
How to create a Gua Sha routine?
Step 1:
Prep your skin by using your favorite cleanser or one of the many professionally used cleansers offered in our SKN BAR Rx.
Step 2:
Next, apply a cream, serum, or facial oil to hydrate your skin. Sea Buckthorn oil, for example, can help support a hydrated, healthy-looking glow. You always want to use a facial oil or product with enough slip when doing a Gua Sha routine, as it will allow the stone to glide more smoothly and comfortably across your skin.
Step 3:
Gently move the stone in sweeping motions upward and outward, starting from your neck and moving up towards your chin. Then sweep along your chin, cheeks, and gently around your eyes. Start at the center of your face and move to the outer areas to direct fluid towards the lymph nodes.
Step 4:
Finish with gentle downward strokes along the neck to support drainage and leave the skin looking and feeling more refreshed.
Step 5:
Repeat these steps about three to five times for about five to ten minutes daily to see the benefits. This is supposed to be a relaxing step in your skincare routine, so feel free to move as slowly as you wish.
At SKN BAR Rx, we love incorporating Gua Sha into our treatments because when combined with professional-grade skincare, it can help support a more refreshed and radiant looking complexion.
